Africatown Archaeology

The artifacts featured on this page are from Africatown archaeological excavations conducted in 2010 by Neil Norman, Ph.D. and the College of William and Mary. These excavations took place on two Africatown sites, one in Lewis Quarters and the other one at the home site of Africatown co-founder, Peter Lee.  

This project was funded by the Smithsonian’s Slave Wrecks Project in partnership with Jones Archaeology Consulting (JAC). This page is hosted by the University of South Alabama (USA) and updated by the USA Archaeology Museum.  Archaeological excavations by Neil Norman, Ph.D. and the College of William and Mary, Artifact cataloging by Chelsea Cook and the USA Center for Archaeological Studies, Photogrammetry, 3D scanning, and photography by Rhiannon Black and the USA Archaeology Museum.
