USA Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology is dedicated to state-of-the-art research programs relevant to identification of new pharmacologic targets and therapeutic strategies in human disease. Inextricably linked to this objective is the goal of providing a highly relevant and stimulating educational environment for graduate, post-graduate, medical, and undergraduate students.
Our faculty's research programs are well supported by the federal government, private foundations, and industry. We have strong links to the Center for Lung Biology, the Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, and Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the USA Health University Hospital. Along with the individual faculty research areas listed on our website, the department provides services to the private sector in areas related to:
- Pre-clinical development and clinical testing of novel therapeutic strategies in pulmonary arterial hypertension and other prevalent lung diseases
- Clinical studies on folate metabolism and disposition in human subject
- Medico-legal consulting activities pertaining broadly to pharmacology
Potential students may find the following distinguishing features of our graduate and post-graduate training programs informative. Not only are our students immersed in a highly dynamic and interactive research environment, they also have opportunities for career development because of:
- Department/laboratory supported travel to national and international meetings
- Active participation in clinical case conferences and other clinical activities
- Department funded membership in national/international research organizations
- Involvement in department teaching programs, including the emerging use of "human patient stimulators" in biomedical education
We hope you will take time to peruse the individual faculty research programs, and get a sense of the creativity and vitality that characterizes each one. For prospective graduate students and postdoctoral scientists, look carefully at our graduate studies web page. Finally, we hope that visitors from the private sector will appreciate the ways that the Department contributes to drug development and safety.
