Welcome to the Civil Engineering High School Competition!

The student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the University of South Alabama (USA-ASCE) is hosting a High School Civil Engineering Competition to be held Wednesday, February 15, 2023.  The purpose of the event is to provide regional High School students the opportunity to obtain knowledge and hands-on experience with the Civil Engineering design process.  The competition will include four events judged on, creativity, problem solving, design, construction, and performance of various Civil Engineering problems.  This year, student teams can compete in four different competitions: mini concrete canoe, balsa wood tower, concrete ladder golf, and sand filtration. Each competition comes with a set of rules and scoring rubric. There will also be opportunities for the students to hear from Civil Engineering faculty about our engineering program and ask questions.
To provide the best learning opportunity for your students, a representative from USA-ASCE will be assigned to assist your students, throughout the preparation time, as needed without encroaching on your students’ creativity. We will also provide instructional material such as videos and presentations, as requested. USA-ASCE will be available to assist in any other ways, however, we want to ensure that the HS students lead and develop their own projects.
USA-ASCE hopes to develop your students’ critical thinking, creativity, and engineering skills through this competition. We also hope to spark interest in the civil engineering discipline. If you are interested in a student team participating, please contact Dr. Eric Steward at esteward@southalabama.edu. USA-ASCE looks forward to working with you and your students in the near future."
