Angela Jordan, Ph.D.
Assistant Vice President of Research Development

Angela Jordan has been with the Office of Research and Economic Development since 2016. She provides leadership for a department that supports proposal development, research collaborations, ORED internal competitions, funding opportunity identification, limited submissions, faculty development programming, and research communications.

She joined South in 2013 to do proposal development for USA's School of Computing. In the ensuing years she has worked with faculty and staff from across the university on submissions to a variety of federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation; the departments of Education, Justice, State, and Transportation; the Federal Aviation Administration; Strategic Capabilities Office; NASA; the National Institutes of Health; Health Resources and Services Administration; National Endowment for the Humanities; National Park Service; and Office of Research Integrity.

Angela has a Ph.D. in instructional design from USA's College of Education. Her dissertation research created a faculty training model for community engaged team science. She previously earned ABD status for a PhD in English literature from Indiana University, and has a BA in English with a concentration in fiction writing from Northwestern University. At Indiana University she taught English for five years. She is a proud first generation college student.

She is an active member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals and a current co-chair of the mentoring team. In 2025 she was honored with the organization's Mentoring Award.

Maitland Thull joined the Office of Research and Economic Development in May 2026. As research development specialist, she is dedicated to helping USA faculty elevate their applications by providing hands-on support throughout the competitive funding lifecycle. She works directly with faculty to identify strategic funding opportunities, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and provide the critical proposal development services necessary to position their projects for success.

Maitland brings three years of impactful, high-stakes experience navigating complex federal and state grant landscapes. She has worked on submissions and project execution with a variety of agencies and programs, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), and the Department of Transportation’s RAISE grant program. Complementing her work in the grant lifecycle, she possesses specialized expertise in large-scale strategic planning. Prior to joining South, she was appointed by Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson to serve in the city's Office of Resilience—the first municipal office of its kind in the State of Alabama—where she facilitated cross-sector partnerships, supported the development of initiatives addressing environmental and infrastructure challenges, and guided strategic risk analysis.

Maitland holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on Technology, Science, and Society from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she also minored in computer science and communications.

She is a member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) and is currently pursuing her Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification.
